The City of Fresno saw a slight increase in vehicle burglaries in 2024. This trend is seen throughout Fresno and is not isolated to a certain area in town.  We must be vigilant and ensure that we do everything we can to prevent our vehicles from being targeted by burglars this year.  Here are some tips to keep your vehicles safer:

  • Secure your vehicle: Always lock your car and roll up the windows, even if parked in front of your home.  Double-check to ensure your doors are locked as you walk away.
  • Hide valuables: Keep all valuables, cash/coins, bags, backpacks, and/or electronic equipment out of sight.  Place these items in your trunk before you park. If you don’t have a trunk, conceal the items as best as possible, such as placing them under a seat.
  • Park wisely: Park in well-lit, busy areas and avoid being hidden by larger vehicles, fences, or foliage.  When feasible, park in an area that is monitored by security cameras.
  • Use anti-theft devices: Install an audible alarm system or steering wheel lock.
  • Be aware: Be aware of your surroundings before leaving your vehicle.
  • Report suspicious activity: Call (559) 621-7000 to report suspicious activity or 9-1-1 for a crime in progress or emergency.  Please notify the police department of any thefts, burglaries, or attempted burglaries.  This provides us with the data needed to know where to deploy resources.
  • Record serial numbers: Engrave a personal identifier on valuables so they can be traced back to you if stolen. Do not use your social security or bank account numbers.
  • When shopping, please be mindful of leaving your items in the trunk and returning to the store to continue shopping. A potential thief could be watching for an easy opportunity.

By following these strategies, you can significantly reduce the risk of vehicle-related crimes. Stay vigilant and safe!
